Ingredients

Instructions

  1. [Authentic Recipe]
  2. [Mugwort Dough] Boil and finely chop mugwort (or Taiwan's unique herb 'Cudweed'). Knead this herb into a dough of glutinous rice flour and sugar, making a vibrant green, slightly sweet dough.
  3. [Salty Filling (Caipu Mi)] Wash and finely chop Taiwanese dried radish (Caipu). Heat oil in a pan, sauté minced pork, dried shrimp, and shallots, add the dried radish and sauté until moisture evaporates and it's fragrant. Season with soy sauce and white pepper, cool.
  4. Flatten the sweet green dough in your palm, generously enclose the salty radish filling.
  5. Seal like Xiaolongbao, press slightly flat into a round shape (or press into a turtle shell wooden mold for patterns).
  6. Place on banana leaves (or shell ginger leaves), steam for 15-
  7. mins until the dough becomes a glossy deep green.

Trivia

[For Women] Famous for huge lines at Jiufen's 'Alan Caozai Guo'. Japanese expect 'mugwort mochi = red bean', so finding salty radish and meat inside is shocking at first, but this 'sweet & savory' is completely addictive.

Eating tips & etiquette

[Unique Eating] Bite into it while freshly made, warm, and soft, letting the gap between the outer 'sweet mochi' and inner 'salty, peppery radish' bug your brain!
